Start the day with a program at the Heard Museum. Participants will receive an orange t-shirt to commemorate the day (Price includes lunch and orange shirt day t-shirt, sizes on a first come, first served basis).
Ann Marshall, Historian, will give an overview of the Heard Museum’s exhibit, “Away From Home: American Indian boarding School Stories.” Our panelists are from two different boarding schools, and they graduated in two different decades.
In 1968 LouVina Maho was a senior at the Stewart Indian School in Stewart, Nevada when she won the title of Miss Stewart Indian School. She proudly represented the boarding school she called home for four years. 22 years later, Cromwell Bontio, was crowned the last Miss Phoenix Indian School in 1990.
Join us for a special presentation as we hear from both women about their experiences and life at Stewart and Phoenix Indian School.
After the panel participants will make their way to Steele Indian School Park where they will enjoy a luncheon discussion inside Memorial Hall.
Memorial Hall is an exclusive look inside a building that is dedicated to the boys from Phoenix Indian who served in WWI. This is a rare opportunity to explore the beautiful multistory red-brick building and see the suspended balcony. In addition, Felicita Cromwell Bonito” will lead a walking tour of the former school grounds and share her memories of life on campus.
This 5-hour program includes a moderated discussion at the Heard Museum with Ms. Maho, boxed lunch, rare public access to Memorial Hall, a led tour, and an orange shirt designed specifically for this program. Guests are encouraged to visit Away From Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories before or after the panel discussion.
